Description

Shield-shaped mirror with a hand-carved wooden frame.

A perfect specimen of the Florentine “Barocchetto” style, which at the turn of the 18th century fused Baroque magnificence with Rococo lightness.

Rather than for personal grooming, these small mirrors served as “light amplifiers.” They were typically hung in dark spots between windows or in alcoves. In an era illuminated solely by candles, the glass—frequently slightly convex or with an “antique” finish—and the gold-leaf frame were designed to catch every spark of light, turning a small section of the wall into a bright centerpiece.
